LESSON 1.28: THE KING IS THE SUFFERING SERVANT (PART 1)

Loved one, in two parts we are going to share with you a lesson without referencing all the passages of Scripture. You should search the Scriptures to ensure what you read is so (cf. Acts 17:11).

We intend to speak to you about Jesus, the King of kings, who gave His life a ransom for many. He died for you and me because He wanted us to live eternally. There is more to the story, so stay with us to the end.

The King Is The Suffering Servant

Long ago the prophet Isaiah described Jesus as the suffering servant. At Caesarea Philippi Jesus told His apostles that the older Jewish leaders, the leading priests, and the teachers of the law would make Him suffer many things. He would be killed. Then, on the third day, He would be raised from death.

Jesus' followers could not bear the thought of Jesus suffering and dying. Simon Peter took Jesus aside and said, "God save you from those sufferings, Lord! Those things will never happen to you!" But Jesus said to Peter, "Get away from me, Satan! You are not helping me! You don't care about the same things God does. You care only about things that people think are important." By trying to save Jesus, Peter was hindering God's plan.

Jesus Talks With Moses And Elijah About His Death

Jesus took Peter, James, and John and went up on a high mountain to pray. While Jesus was praying, His face became bright like the sun, and His clothes became shining white. Then two men were there talking with Him. They were Moses and Elijah. They, also, were bright and glorious. They were talking with Jesus about His death that would happen in Jerusalem.

When Peter saw this, he said to Jesus, "Master, it is good that we are here. We will put three tents here -- one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." Peter did not know what to say because he and the other two followers were very afraid.

While Peter was saying these things, a bright cloud came around them and covered them. A voice came out of the cloud and said, "This is my Son, the one I love. I am very pleased with him. Obey him!" When the voice stopped, the followers looked up, and they saw that Jesus was now alone.

As Jesus and His followers were walking down the mountain, Jesus said, "Don't tell anyone about what you saw on the mountain. Wait until the Son of Man has been raised from death. Then you can tell people what you saw."

Jesus Enters Jerusalem Like A King

Six days before the Passover Festival, Jesus and His followers went to Bethany. Bethany is the town where Lazarus lived. Many of the Jews heard that Jesus was in Bethany, so they went there to see Him. They also went to see Lazarus, the one Jesus raised from death. So the leading priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well as Jesus.

The next day, Jesus' followers brought a donkey to Him and put their coats on its back. Then they put Jesus on the donkey, and He rode along the road toward Jerusalem. The followers spread their coats on the road before Him.

Jesus was coming close to Jerusalem. He was already near the bottom of the Mount of Olives. The whole group of followers was very happy and excited, and they praised God. They thanked God for all the powerful things they had seen. They said, "Praise to the Son of David. God bless the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Praise to God in heaven!"

Some of the Pharisees said to Jesus, "Teacher, tell your followers not to say these things!" But Jesus answered, "I tell you, these things must be said. If my followers don't say these things, then these rocks will cry out and say them."

This happened to show the full meaning of what Zechariah the prophet said, "Tell the city of Zion, 'Look! Your King is coming to you. He is humble and riding on a donkey.'"

Judas Agrees To Give Jesus To The Priests

The leading priests and teachers of the law were trying to find a way to kill Jesus, but they were afraid of what the people would do.

Then Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus' apostles, went to talk to the leading priests. He said, "I will hand Jesus over to you. What will you pay me for doing this?" The priests gave him 30 silver coins. After this, Judas waited for the best time to betray Jesus.

Jesus Institutes The Lord's Supper

On the first day of the Passover Festival, Jesus ate the Passover meal with His followers. While they were eating, Jesus took some special bread made without yeast. Jesus thanked God for it, broke off some pieces, and gave it to His followers. He said, "Take this bread and eat it. This bread is my body that I am giving for you. Eat this to remember me."

Then Jesus took a cup of wine. Jesus thanked God for it and gave it to His followers. Jesus said, "This fruit of the vine is my blood which will be poured out to forgive the sins of many and to begin a new agreement between God and his people. It will begin when my blood is poured out for you." Jesus said these things in order to teach His followers about His coming death.

Jesus Promises To Send The Holy Spirit

In an effort to comfort His apostles, Jesus said to them, "I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you forever. The Helper is the Spirit of truth. He will teach you everything. The Helper will cause you to remember all that I have told you. This Helper is the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will lead you into all truth."

After this, they sang a song and went out to a beautiful garden called Gethsemane on the side of the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Prays Alone

In the garden, Jesus said to His followers, "Sit here while I go there and pray." He told Peter, James, and John to come with Him. Then He began to be very sad and troubled. Jesus said, "My heart is so heavy with grief, I feel as if I am dying. Wait here and stay awake with me."

Then Jesus walked a little farther, fell on the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, don't make me drink from this cup. But do what you want, not what I want." Jesus went back to his followers and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, "Couldn't you men stay awake with me one hour? Stay awake and pray for strength against temptation. Your spirit wants to do what is right, but your body is weak."

Jesus went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if I must do this, and if it is not possible for me to escape it, then I pray that what you want will be done."

Then Jesus went back to His followers. Again He found them sleeping, so He left them and went away one more time and prayed. This third time He prayed the same thing. An angel from heaven came to help Him. Jesus was full of pain. He struggled hard in prayer. Sweat dripped from His face like drops of blood falling to the ground.

When Jesus finished praying, He went to His followers. They were asleep. Jesus said to them, "The time has come for the Son of Man to be handed over to the control of sinful men. Stand up! We must go. Here comes the man who is handing me over to my enemies."

Jesus Is Arrested

While Jesus was still speaking, Judas came into the garden of Gethsemane with a crowd of people. He led a group of soldiers and some guards from the leading priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, swords, and clubs.

Judas had said to the people with him, "The one I kiss will be Jesus. Arrest him." So Judas went to Jesus and said, "Hello, teacher!" Then he kissed Him.

The men grabbed Jesus and arrested Him. Jesus said to them, "Why did you come to get me with swords and clubs? Do you think I am a criminal? I was with you every day in the temple area. Why didn't you arrest me there? But this is your time - the time when darkness rules." Then all of Jesus' followers left Him and ran away.

Points To Remember

1. Jesus was the Suffering Servant predicted by the prophet Isaiah. Think of it. The divine, eternal, self-existent, sinless, wonder-working Son of God was treated like someone of no importance. He was abused, beaten, condemned as a criminal, and killed. But He would rise again and stand before God to speak for those who have sinned.

2. Jesus was fully human. Moses and Elijah encouraged Him as He faced suffering and death. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus heart was so heavy with grief that He felt like He was dying. He struggled so hard in prayer that sweat dripped from His face like drops of blood, and an angel from heaven came to help Him. Jesus experienced every emotion you and I would experience under similar circumstances. He prayed, "Father, don't make me drink from this cup; but do what you want, not what I want." Jesus, the Suffering Servant, was obedient to His heavenly Father, even to the point of death (Hebrews 5:8-9)...To be continued in Part Two.
