Minister’s Corner - 232 Pray For Our Nation
Loved ones, daily prayer should obviously be a part of our daily activities, as we give thanks for our food at mealtime, and there are morning prayers when we get up and bedtime prayers when we go to bed (cf. 1 Thessalonians 5:17). And there are other things we pray about from time to time, including asking and being thankful for the forgiveness of our sins. But there is something we may forget to pray about from time to time, and that is our nation.
The first president of our nation, George Washington, prayed for America (June 8, 1783):
“I now make it my earnest prayer, that God would have the United States in His holy protection, that He would incline the hearts of the Citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to Government, to entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another, for their fellow citizens of the United States at large, and particularly for their brethren who have served in the Field, and finally, that He would most graciously be blessed to dispose us all, to do Justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that Charity, humility and pacific temper of mind, which were the Characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy Nation. Amen.”
There are many passages in the Bible that call for us to pray for our leaders, for those in authority, including kings and government leaders, to promote peace and godly governance.
Paul urges believers to offer “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings… for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” (1 Timothy 2:1-2)
“Seek the peace of the city… and pray to the Lord for it; for in its peace you will have peace” (Jeremiah 29:7). Even in exile, God commanded His people to pray for the welfare of the governing city.
“He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding” (Daniel 2:21). This verse underscores God’s control over leadership and the importance of seeking His guidance for rulers. God is so good. Love you. Samuel – 25 October 2026
