The Liberty Letter – 300a The Finger Of God

“But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you” (Luke 11:20, KJV).

Loved ones, in Christian theology and biblical interpretation, the "finger of God" is widely understood as a metaphor for the Holy Spirit and the active, dynamic power of God at work in the world.

In our above text, Jesus explains a miracle by saying the demons were cast out with “the finger of God.” In the parallel account in Matthew 12:28, Jesus says He drives them out by the "Spirit of God" (or Holy Spirit), which strongly links the two terms as equivalents.

The phrase first appears in Exodus 8:19 when the Egyptian magicians recognize God's power in the plagues, and later in Exodus 31:18 when the Ten Commandments are written on stone tablets with the "finger of God."

Most biblical scholars view the phrase as a vivid metaphor for God's unmediated power, showing how easily God acts without needing physical strain. The Christian links the "finger" to the Holy Spirit because the Spirit is the personal agent through whom God performs miracles, transforms human hearts, and creates new life. God is so good.
