Liberty Letter- 297a A Misused Verse About Women

August 30, 2026

"It is better to dwell in the corner of a housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house" (Proverbs 21:9)

Loved ones, before the men say "Amen," let's study the text properly. Most people read this verse and conclude that God is against women who talk too much. But that's not what Solomon is teaching.

This is not a commandment. This is not a doctrine about women. This is not a divine ranking of genders. It is a wisdom observation about the destructive nature of strife in relationships. Notice that Solomon says "brawling (contentious) woman" and not "women." The issue is not femininity. The issue is contentiousness.

In the same book, Solomon also rebukes Foolish men - Lazy men - Wicked men - Proud men - Angry men. Therefore, the focus is character, not gender.

Ever since Adam's fall, conflict entered human relationships. Genesis 3 shows us Blame entered marriage – Accusation entered marriage – Self-preservation entered marriage – Struggle entered marriage. Adam blamed Eve. Eve blamed the serpent. Nobody took responsibility.

The first broken relationship in Scripture was not between strangers. It was between husband and wife. Contention is therefore not a female problem. It is an Adamic problem. Men nag. Women nag. Men provoke. Women provoke. Men manipulate. Women manipulate. The fallen nature expresses itself through strife.

The rooftop is not really the hero of the story. The rooftop simply represents escape. Solomon is saying, “When strife dominates a home, people start looking for exits.” Some leave physically. Others leave emotionally. Others remain in the house but are absent in heart.

But here is the beauty of the Gospel: Jesus did not escape humanity's contention. He entered it. While we were fighting God, Christ came near. While we were hostile, Christ reconciled us. While we were contentious, Christ became our peace. The answer to Proverbs 21:9 is not a better rooftop. The answer is a better heart. And that heart is found in Christ.

Before asking, am I married to a contentious person? Ask am I becoming one? Peace is not sustained by finding perfect people. Peace is sustained by people who are being transformed by Christ. God is so good. Love you. Samuel – 30 Aug 2026
