Loved ones, in talking about the importance of maintaining our reputation, the Proverb writer said, “A good name is to be more desired than great wealth, favor is better than silver or gold” (Proverbs 22:1). However, besides just teaching about the value of a good reputation, this comparison to wealth also provides some clues as to how we can earn and maintain our good name.
How can one acquire “great wealth”? Obviously, there may be some factors that are beyond one’s control. But considering what someone can control, several factors lead to wealth. First, one must be willing to work for it. Second, one must keep from squandering his money. Third, one must be consistent in saving, spending, and investing habits to help his wealth grow.
How can one earn “a good name”? It will be similar to what we noticed about acquiring “great wealth.” First, one must engage in good works and do those things he ought to do. Second, one must avoid sinful behaviors that can ruin his reputation. Third, one must prove his character by consistently doing what is right over his lifetime. By doing these things, one can acquire and maintain “a good name.”
So remember that your reputation is valuable. It is more desirable than whatever wealth we might hope to gain in this life. Therefore, we must do what is necessary to have that good name by doing what is right, abstaining from sin, and refusing to deviate from the straight and narrow path. God is so good. Love you.
